Three etudes of Frederic Chopin ("Revolutionary," "Aeolian Harp," and "Sunshine"), as well as his popular "Polinaise in A-flat Major" (“Heroic Polinaise”) will round out the first half of the program. “Heroic," written during a happy period in Chopin’s life, has been widely adapted into popular culture in movie themes ("Till the End of Time," "Shine," "Benjamin Button," etc) as well as on television and by performance groups as diverse as the Doors and the Muppets.

| | Saturday, September 26th, 2009 @ 8 pm Meng Hall, Fullerton Program: Korngold - Zeisl - Brahms - Ravel - Scriabin - Liszt Eric Le Van, a recognized Brahms authority, will perform the youthful and monumental Brahms' Sonata no.3 along with other masterpieces of the late 19th and early 20th century. Of special interest are world premieres of works by Erich Zeisl, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, including the deeply moving set "November". These works are featured on Eric Le Van's new CD release entitled "EXILE", presenting five composers exiled from Europe to Los Angeles in the 1930s, soon to appear on the label Music & Arts (in a collaboration with the Bayerischer Rundfunk in Munich, Germany). "Eric Le Van's pianism is mesmerizing. It has everything: sensitivity, expressive tone, shading, superb finish, and faultless taste and style." With those words, the American Record Guide's David Mulbury echoed the sentiments of many of his colleagues who have likewise found in Eric Le Van a musician of exemplary depth and power. Indeed, Bryce Morrison of Gramophone extolled him as "a brilliant pianist, youthful, ardent and communicative, magically fleet and affectionate." Fanfare Magazine, citing "artistry of the highest order", described Mr. Le Van as " uncannily sensitive to Scriabin's nuances of phrase and harmonic subtleties." In both the St Petersburg Times and Clavier Magazine, critic and Scriabin authority John Bell Young called him "a Scriabinist to the manner born," adding that "more vivid, imaginative music making than this would be hard to find, no matter what the repertoire."

| | Russian-star-launc-.pdfA PIANO recital by highly-talented young Russian-born pianist Sophia Lisovskaya was Clitheroe Concerts Society's first event of the new season. Although Sophia was born in Moscow and achieved national status as a teenager, guided by her musician parents, she was determined to continue her education in London at the Royal College of Music. Her programme was intriguing, starting with familiar Beethoven and Chopin, but after the interval she surveyed Alexander Scriabin's development as a composer, with works from each stage of his career. Many of the audience were unfamiliar with this innovative and controversial (some say eccentric) Russian composer, who developed his own musical language, influencing later composers such as Messiaen, Prokofiev and Stravinsky. |
